Mary Louisa Armitt was a very smart woman from England. People called her Louie. She loved to learn about many different things. She was a teacher and a writer. She also studied birds. We call people who study birds ornithologists.

Louie had two sisters. All three sisters were very gifted. They even started a school together. Louie studied music and natural history. She wrote many articles for a news paper. She also wrote about the history of music.

Later, Louie lived in a place called Hawkshead. She had heart trouble and could not travel far. She joined a library in London to keep learning. In 1897, she published a book about birds. It was called Studies of Lakeland Birds.

Louie left a big gift for others. She started the Armitt Library in Ambleside. This library held many old book collections. One collection belonged to John Ruskin. Another collection was from a book club. The library opened in 1912. It helps people study history and nature today.
