Mary Jepkosgei Keitany is a legendary long-distance runner from Kenya. She became one of the most successful athletes in road racing history.

Many people know her for her incredible speed in marathons. A marathon is a very long race on roads. In 2017, she won the London Marathon with a time of 2:17:01. This amazing run set a new world record for women-only marathons. She was also a master of the half marathon. Her best time for that distance was 1:05:50 in 2011. This time held the world record for three years.

Keitany followed a very disciplined way of training to reach the top. She began running during her primary school years in Kabarnet. In 2002, she joined the Hidden Talent Academy to improve. She trained in a place called Iten to prepare for big races. Even when she became a mother, she found ways to keep running. She would stop training during pregnancy and start again when her babies were six months old. This shows her great strength and dedication to her sport.

Her racing career began with early successes in the mid-2000s. In 2006, she competed in her first senior race. By 2007, she won a silver medal at the World Road Running Championships in Italy. She faced many famous runners like Lornah Kiplagat and Tirunesh Dibaba. After taking a break for her first child, she returned to win the World Half Marathon Championships in 2009. That same year, she won the Lille Half Marathon in France. These victories helped her become a global star in athletics.

Keitany holds many impressive titles and fast times from around the world. She won the New York City Marathon four times in 2014, 2016, 2018, and again in 2018. She also set a world record for the 25 kilometre race in Berlin in 2010. Her time for that distance was 1:19:53. In 2011, she set world best times for 8 kilometres and 10 miles. As of late 2022, she was fifth on the all-time list for the marathon. She also ranked eleventh for the half marathon.

Beyond her running, Keitany has made a big difference in her home country. In 2018, the Shoe4Africa foundation built a school in her honor. The Mary Keitany Shoe4Africa school is located in Torokwonin, Baringo County, Kenya. She and her husband, Charles, serve on the school board to help. This shows how she uses her success to support others. She retired from professional racing in 2021 at age 39. She retired because a hip injury made it hard to train.
