He spent much of his life as an apothecary. An apothecary is a person who runs a shop for medicine. His shop in Berlin was very big. It was a busy place for science research. Klaproth was a very careful worker. He used new ways to study minerals. This helped him find many new elements. Elements are the basic parts of the earth.

In 1789, Klaproth discovered uranium. He also found zirconium. He named zirconium after a Persian word. That word means gold-colored. He helped find other elements too. These include titanium, strontium, cerium, and chromium. He also confirmed that tellurium and beryllium were real elements.

Klaproth was a leader in science. He led the Berlin Academy of Sciences. He also joined science groups in London and Sweden. He wrote many papers about his work. At the end of his life, he had a huge rock collection. It had 4,828 pieces! Now, that collection is in a museum in Berlin. People even named a crater on the moon after him.
