Abraham Gottlob Werner was a famous German scientist. He lived from 1749 to 1817. He is often called the father of German geology. Geology is the study of the Earth and its rocks. Werner was a great teacher at a mining school. His students came from all over Europe to learn from him.

Werner had a big idea called Neptunism. He believed a huge ocean once covered the Earth. He thought this ocean slowly moved away. As the water left, it left behind layers of rocks. He used the term geognosy to describe his study. Geognosy means the study of how the Earth is built.

He also made a special way to name colors. This helped people describe the look of different minerals. Many things are named after him today. There is a mineral called wernerite. There are also mountains named after him in Antarctica and Greenland. Werner helped many people start to study our planet in a new way.
