He wrote many different things like novels, essays, and movie scripts. People often call him a master of "the new unpleasantness" because of his style. He used dark humor to look at the world. His stories often showed the messy or silly parts of modern life. He wanted to show how society can sometimes be quite strange. Many people believe his work helped change British writing in the late 20th century.

Amis had a very specific way of building his stories. He used complex and beautiful sentence structures to grab a reader's attention. He also used irony, which is a way of saying things that might mean the opposite. Some of his books used a special trick where the story moved backward in time. For example, his novel Time's Arrow tells a story in reverse. He also liked to pair characters together in his books to show how they related. This became a regular part of his writing style over many years.

His journey as a writer began with his early education. He was born in Oxford, England, to a writer named Kingsley Amis. As a teenager, he mostly read science fiction and comic books. Later, his stepmother introduced him to the classic author Jane Austen. This changed how he thought about reading and writing. He graduated from Oxford University with very high honors in English. After university, he worked as a reviewer and a literary editor. He even used a fake name, Henry Tilney, when he wrote reviews.

Amis became very successful with several important books. His first novel, The Rachel Papers, won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1973. He is most famous for his "London Trilogy." This group of books includes Money, London Fields, and The Information. His book Money was even named one of the 100 best English-language novels by Time magazine. He was also listed for the Booker Prize several times. In 2008, The Times named him one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945.

His influence can be seen in many other writers today. Authors like Zadie Smith and Will Self were shaped by his work. He even taught creative writing at the University of Manchester for several years. Even though he faced criticism, such as when people argued about his book London Fields, he remained a major figure. He passed away in Florida in 2023 from esophageal cancer. Many critics say that living through the late 20th century felt like living in the "Amis Era." His stories continue to help us think about the world around us.
