He was known for making many different kinds of stories. Some of his books were for adults, which people call mainstream fiction. Other books were about space and the future. These are called science fiction stories. He was so good at writing that The Times named him one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945. His stories were so special that people turned them into plays, radio shows, and TV series.

Banks used a clever way to name his books. He used the name Iain Banks for his mainstream stories. For his science fiction, he added an 'M' to become Iain M. Banks. This helped readers know what kind of adventure they were starting. He began writing when he was only 11 years old. He finished his first novel when he was 16. Later, he worked many different jobs to help him write. He worked as a clerk and a technician. These jobs gave him time to travel through Europe and North America. This travel helped him find new ideas for his writing.

His career really took off in 1984. That was the year his first big novel, The Wasp Factory, was published. This book was a huge success and sold over one million copies. It was even translated into 80 different languages! After this, his editor told him to try writing one book every year. Banks agreed to this big goal. He wrote many books in a row, like Walking on Glass and The Bridge. In 1987, he wrote his first science fiction book, Consider Phlebas. This book started a famous series called the Culture series. This series eventually grew to include eight different novels.

Banks had many interests outside of just writing stories. He loved learning about Scotland and its traditions. In 2004, he wrote a travel book called Raw Spirit. In this book, he visited places that make whisky. He even won a game show called Celebrity Mastermind. His special subject for the show was malt whisky and Scottish distilleries. He also cared a lot about the world and politics. He used his voice to speak up for things he believed were fair. He was a very active person in his community and his country.

Even after he passed away in 2013, his work lives on. He published 26 novels during his life. His very last novel, The Quarry, was published in the same month he died. People are still finding new things about his work today. A project began to share his early drawings and maps from the Culture series. These drawings help us see the worlds he imagined in his head. New books of his art and notes are being released to fans. His stories continue to help people imagine wonderful, far-away places.
