Marshallese is a special way of speaking used by the Marshallese people. It is the main language of the Marshall Islands. Almost all of the 59,000 people living there speak it every day.

Many people also speak it in other places. There are about 27,000 Marshallese citizens living in the United States. You can also find speakers in countries like Nauru and Kiribati. This language helps people share their history and their lives. It is a very important part of their culture.

The language has two main ways of speaking called dialects. These are the Ratak dialect in the east and the Rālik dialect in the west.

They are similar enough that people can still understand each other. However, they sound different when they use certain words. For example, they handle double consonants in different ways. In the Ratak dialect, a vowel is put between consonants. In the Rālik dialect, the vowel comes before the consonants. This makes the two ways of speaking sound quite unique.

Marshallese has a very interesting system of sounds. It has many consonants, which are sounds like 'p' or 't'. Some of these sounds are called "light" because they are relaxed. Other sounds are called "heavy" because they use more muscle movement.

The language also has a vertical vowel system. This means there are only four main vowel sounds. Even with only four vowels, they can change sound based on the consonants around them.

Learning about these sounds can be a big job for researchers. A researcher named Bender studied the language in 1968. He discovered how the vowel system actually works. He found that what sounded like many vowels were actually just different versions of four main ones.

Other experts like Choi and Willson have also studied these sounds. They have different ideas about how the vowels are shaped. These studies help us understand how the language is built.

Even though it is a unique language, it is part of a larger family. Marshallese belongs to the Micronesian language group. It is also part of the larger Austronesian language family.

It is closely related to languages like Gilbertese and Pohnpeian. In fact, it shares about 50% of its words with those languages. This shows how different island groups are connected through their speech. It is a wonderful way to see how people are linked together.
