Marmots have stout bodies and short, strong legs. They have large claws for digging. These claws help them make burrows in the ground. Some marmots even live in rockpiles. These animals are herbivores, which means they eat only plants. They eat grass, berries, roots, and flowers.

Marmots are very social. They live in groups and talk to each other. They use loud whistles to send signals. This helps when they feel alarmed. In the summer, they are very active. In the winter, they hibernate. This means they sleep deep underground for the cold months. The Olympic marmot is the largest species in North America. The Alaska marmot is one of the smallest.
