Samuel Langhorne Clemens, known by his pen name Mark Twain, was a monumental American writer and humorist.

Many scholars consider him the "father of American literature." This title reflects his deep influence on how stories are told in the United States. His work often used wit and satire to examine society. Satire is a form of humor used to criticize or mock people's behavior. Through his prose, he explored complex themes like American identity and social justice. His most famous novel, *Adventures of Huckleberry Finn*, is often called the "Great American Novel."

Twain's career began with practical, hands-on labor. After leaving school in the fifth grade, he became a printer's apprentice. He worked as a typesetter, which involves arranging metal letters to print text. He later became a riverboat pilot on the Mississippi River.

This was a highly prestigious and difficult job. A pilot had to memorize every submerged snag and rock for twelve hundred miles. They had to navigate these hazards even in total darkness. This profession provided him with his famous pen name. "Mark Twain" was the cry used by a leadsman to signal a depth of two fathoms, or twelve feet. This depth indicated safe water for a steamboat.

His life was marked by significant transitions and geographic shifts. He was raised in Hannibal, Missouri, a river port town. This location served as the inspiration for the fictional St. Petersburg in his novels. During the American Civil War, he briefly served as a Second Lieutenant in a Confederate unit. Following the war, he moved west to join his brother, Orion, in Nevada. He attempted to work as a miner on the Comstock Lode.

Since mining was not successful for him, he turned to journalism. He worked for the *Territorial Enterprise* in Virginia City. It was here, on February 3, 1863, that he first used the name Mark Twain.

Twain's literary success arrived through his ability to tell engaging stories. His first major breakthrough was the humorous tale "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County." Published in 1865, this story brought him international attention. He also wrote *The Adventures of Tom Sawyer* in 1876.

His travels as a reporter also shaped his writing. He visited the Sandwich Islands, now known as Hawaii, and later traveled through the Mediterranean. These journeys resulted in his collection of travel letters titled *The Innocents Abroad*. His fame eventually made him a highly sought-after public speaker.

As his influence grew, Twain became a vocal participant in political discussions. He was not always consistent in his views. For example, he initially supported American interests in the Hawaiian Islands. However, he later reversed this position. From 1901 until his death, he served as vice president of the American Anti-Imperialist League. He spoke out strongly against the Philippine-American War and American colonialism.

He also used his writing to highlight international issues. In 1905, he published a satirical pamphlet regarding Belgian atrocities in the Congo Free State.

Despite his massive success, Twain faced severe financial challenges. He earned significant wealth from his books and lectures. However, he often invested in unsuccessful business ventures. One notable failure was the Paige Compositor. This was a mechanical typesetter designed to automate printing. Because the machine was too complex and imprecise, it failed commercially. These losses led Twain to file for bankruptcy.

He eventually overcame these troubles with help from Henry Huttleston Rogers. Rogers was an executive at Standard Oil who helped manage Twain's finances. Remarkably, Twain eventually paid all his creditors in full.

Twain's life ended in a way that seemed to fulfill a personal prediction. He was born in 1835, shortly after Halley's Comet appeared in the sky. In 1909, he wrote that he expected to die when the comet returned. He viewed the two events as connected.

He died of a heart attack in 1910, the day after the comet reached its closest point to the Sun. His legacy continues through his vast body of work. Even a century after his death, his writings remain central to the study of American culture.
