Sir Mark James Todd is a celebrated New Zealand equestrian. He is most famous for his success in eventing. Eventing is a complex sport that tests the partnership between a rider and a horse.

It requires mastery of different skills over several stages. Todd was so successful that the International Federation for Equestrian Sports voted him the Rider of the 20th century. This title recognizes his immense impact on the sport globally.

Eventing is a discipline that demands extreme versatility. It typically involves dressage, cross-country, and show jumping. In dressage, the horse and rider must perform precise, choreographed movements. Cross-country requires the horse to gallop over natural obstacles like logs or water.

Finally, show jumping tests the horse's agility over fences in an arena. Todd's ability to navigate these varied challenges made him a pioneer for New Zealand eventing.

Todd's competitive career reached incredible heights through his Olympic performances. He won gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. His most famous partner during this time was Charisma. Charisma was a Thoroughbred with 1/16 Percheron blood. Together, they achieved back-to-back Olympic golds.

Todd also won gold at the World Championships in 1990 and 1998. He has won the Badminton Horse Trials four times and the Burghley Horse Trials five times.

His longevity in the sport is statistically remarkable. Todd is the first New Zealander to compete in seven Olympic Games. He competed in 1984, 1988, 1992, 2000, 2008, 2012, and 2016. By winning a medal at the 2012 Olympics, he equaled a record held by Hungarian fencer Aladár Gerevich. That record is the longest gap of 28 years between a first and last Olympic medal. He also shares the record for the second-most Olympic medals won by any New Zealander.

Todd's journey began in Cambridge, New Zealand, where he developed a passion for horses. He participated in pony clubs and local shows as a youth. While he once considered becoming a jockey, he eventually focused on show jumping. After finishing school, he earned a Diploma of Agriculture from the Waikato Technical Institute. He worked as a farmer while simultaneously training and selling horses. In 1978, he joined New Zealand's first three-day eventing team to compete at a world championship in Kentucky.

After his initial international experience, Todd moved to England to further his career. He worked in stables to gain access to horses for event rides. In 1980, he won his first Badminton Horse Trials riding Southern Comfort. His success helped pave the way for many other New Zealand champions. Athletes like Tinks Pottinger, Blyth Tait, and Vicky Latta all followed in his footsteps. They credit Todd with opening doors for New Zealand riders on the world stage.

Even highly successful athletes face significant challenges and controversies. In 2000, his individual bronze medal win in Sydney was complicated by national debates regarding personal allegations. Later, in 2022, a video surfaced showing Todd hitting a horse with a branch during a training clinic. The incident occurred because a horse refused to enter a water obstacle. Todd issued an apology for his actions. Following an investigation, he received a four-month suspension from the British Horseracing Authority. He has since returned to his professional work.

Beyond competing, Todd has contributed deeply to the equestrian community. He has authored several books, including his autobiography, *So Far, So Good*. He also produced training videos to help others learn the sport. After retiring from international competition, he returned to New Zealand to breed horses. He has been involved in the administration of eventing as a coach for the Olympic team. His legacy remains tied to his skill, his many medals, and his influence on New Zealand sport.
