Charlotte Dujardin is a highly decorated British dressage rider and equestrian. Dressage is a specialized discipline of riding that focuses on precision and harmony between horse and rider. Athletes perform complex movements that require immense skill and control. Dujardin is widely considered the dominant dressage rider of her era. In 2014, she achieved a historic milestone by holding every available individual elite dressage title simultaneously. These titles included the Olympic freestyle, World freestyle, and Grand Prix Special. She also held the World Cup individual dressage and European freestyle titles.

Her career began with very early exposure to horses in Bedfordshire. As a two-year-old, she helped her elder sisters by returning horses to trailers. By age three, she earned second place in a Pony Club show jumping competition. To support their equestrian interests, her mother, Jane Dujardin, bought and sold ponies. Dujardin eventually transitioned from show jumping to dressage with guidance from trainer Debbie Thomas. She used an inheritance from her grandmother to purchase a horse for this new path. Later, she found employment with Carl Hester in Gloucestershire, working as a groom at his yard.

One of the most significant partnerships in equestrian history involved Dujardin and a Dutch Warmblood gelding named Valegro. Originally, Hester and co-owner Roly Luard intended for Dujardin to develop Valegro for Hester to ride. However, Dujardin competed with him in their first Grand Prix event in 2011. This pair went on to win gold at the European Dressage Championship in Rotterdam. They also secured the FEI World Cup Grand Prix at London Olympia in 2011. During that event, they set a new World Record for the Olympic Grand Prix discipline. Their score reached 88.022% during this competition.

The success of Dujardin and Valegro continued through several major international stages. In 2012, they won the World Cup freestyle event at Olympia with a score of 87.875%. They also represented Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympics. In the first round, they set a new Olympic record with a score of 83.784%. They later won the team gold medal and the individual gold medal. Their individual performance included music featuring Land of Hope and Glory and the chimes of Big Ben. Dujardin and Valegro also won double individual gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. This achievement made her the first British woman to retain an individual Olympic title.

Valegro's career concluded with a highly successful period of competition. In 2015, the pair won the FEI World Cup in Las Vegas with a score of 94.169%. This victory marked their fourth consecutive World Title. They remain the only competition pair to have ever held four consecutive world titles. Dujardin decided to retire Valegro in December 2016 at the age of 14. His final performance took place at the Olympia London International Horse Show. Dujardin stated she wanted him to retire on a high note because he had given her everything.

Throughout her career, Dujardin has earned significant honors and recognition. She was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2013. In 2017, she received the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for her services to equestrianism. She has won six Olympic medals, which is a joint record for a female British Olympian. In her home area of Enfield, a strip of public housing named Dujardin Mews honors her. There is also a gold post box in Enfield to celebrate her achievements.

In recent years, Dujardin's career has faced significant challenges and scrutiny. In July 2024, she withdrew from the Summer Olympics in Paris. This followed the emergence of a video showing her excessively whipping a horse during training. The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) investigated the incident. In December 2024, the FEI upheld a one-year suspension and a fine of 10,000 Swiss Francs. This fine is approximately £8,881. The incident also resulted in the loss of UK Sport funding and the termination of several sponsorships. Dujardin has also authored an autobiography titled "The Girl on the Dancing Horse."
