She was famous for writing many different kinds of books. She often used pseudonyms, which are fake names used by authors. This allowed her to create new personalities for each story. She wrote mysteries, nonfiction, and books for young people. Her stories often featured characters facing difficult life problems. These characters did not always find easy or happy endings. Meaker felt that real life was not always neatly tied up. She wanted to write about the world as it truly felt.

Meaker had a very interesting way of working. She once pretended to be a literary agent. Her "clients" were actually just her own different pen names. This helped her manage all the different books she wrote. As Vin Packer, she wrote twenty mystery novels. One famous book was the romance novel Spring Fire. It was published in 1952 and changed things for many readers. This book helped start the genre of lesbian pulp fiction. An editor even asked her to write it because other books were selling so well.

Her writing journey began with many early struggles. She grew up in Auburn, New York. As a young girl, she loved reading books. She even attended a boarding school in Virginia. She was quite a rebellious student during her school years. In high school, she tried to sell stories to magazines. Most of the time, the magazines said no. She collected many rejection slips before she became successful. Eventually, she sold her first story for $750. This was a huge start for her career.

Meaker wrote under several different names during her life.

As Vin Packer, she wrote crime stories like The Evil Friendship in 1958. As Ann Aldrich, she wrote five nonfiction books about lesbian life. These included We Walk Alone in 1955 and We, Too, Must Love in 1958. These books helped people find places to meet and live. Later, she used the name M. E. Kerr for young adult books. She wrote Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack! in 1972. This book was named one of the most significant books for young people.

Her work connects to the way we see the world today. She wrote about serious topics like racism and social class. Her characters often struggled against rules that felt unfair. This made her stories feel very real to many readers. She won the Margaret A. Edwards Award for her work. This is a lifetime award from the American Library Association. The New York Times even called her a grand master of fiction. Her books helped people feel less alone in their own lives. She wrote for herself and for anyone who felt different.
