She was a major star during the silent film era and the Great Depression. Her career spanned many different types of performance. She worked in traveling theater troupes, on Broadway, and in Hollywood movies. Dressler was known for her ability to make people laugh through physical comedy. She used her facial expressions and large, strong body to create humor. Her talent helped her become one of the most popular performers of her time.

Dressler's journey into performance began in her childhood in Cobourg, Ontario.

Her father, Alexander Rudolph Koerber, was a music teacher and a church organist. As a young girl, Marie sang and assisted with the church organ. Her first acting role occurred at age five when she played Cupid in a church play. She left home at age 14 to join the Nevada Stock Company. To get the job, she claimed she was 18 years old. She earned between $6 and $8 per week and sent half of it to her mother.

Working in traveling troupes taught her to be a "quick study." This meant she could learn new scripts in an hour or less.

Her stage career progressed through several distinct stages of professional growth. First, she worked as a chorus girl in various opera companies. She joined the Starr Opera Company in Philadelphia and the Bennett and Moulton Opera Company. During this time, she played roles in light opera and learned to handle different characters. Next, she moved to Broadway in 1892. Although she initially wanted to be a serious tragedienne, she found her true calling in comedy. This transition was encouraged by the writer Maurice Barrymore. Eventually, she became a leading lady in massive Broadway hits.

One of her most significant successes was the production of *The Lady Slavey* in 1896.

This role at the Casino Theatre lasted for two years. Dressler became famous for her "seriocomic" reactions and her ability to perform double takes. She used her physical strength to carry her co-star, Dan Daly, to entertain the audience. This success allowed her to support her parents by buying them a home on Long Island. However, her career also faced periods of intense struggle. She declared bankruptcy twice, once in 1900 and again later in her life. She even lost $40,000 on a failed production in London in 1909.

Dressler's career is also defined by her leadership and her work in early cinema. In 1914, she starred in *Tillie's Punctured Romance*, the first full-length screen comedy.

This film featured other famous actors like Charlie Chaplin and Mabel Normand. Dressler was also a pioneer for workers' rights in the theater. In 1919, she was elected the first president of the Chorus Equity Association. This was a union formed during the Actors' Equity strike in New York City. Her leadership helped organize stage-chorus players to protect their interests.

After a period of declining work in the 1920s, Dressler experienced a remarkable comeback.

She returned to films at the age of 59 and found great success in Hollywood. In 1930, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in *Min and Bill*. This achievement proved her lasting talent despite the changing styles of the film industry. Even during difficult times, she remained active in her community. During World War I, she toured to help sell Liberty bonds and entertained soldiers. Her popularity was so great that American infantrymen in France named both a street and a cow after her.

Marie Dressler's life was a complex mix of massive stardom and personal hardship. She transitioned from a young girl in Ontario to a global icon of comedy. Her ability to improvise and her quick learning skills made her a versatile artist. She navigated the shift from live theater to the motion picture industry with great skill. Dressler died of cancer in 1934.
