He was a major figure during the silent era of cinema. Many historians call him an auteur. An auteur is a director with a unique and personal artistic vision. He helped introduce sophisticated plots to the movies. He also brought psychological and noirish undercurrents to the screen. His work changed how people understood the depth of film stories.

Stroheim was famous for his extreme attention to detail. This approach often led to clashes with Hollywood studio bosses. He demanded high budgets and specific working conditions. One of his most famous projects was the film Greed.

This film was an adaptation of Frank Norris's 1899 novel, McTeague. Stroheim wanted a highly detailed reproduction of the book. He filmed many scenes in actual locations. He used San Francisco and Death Valley for his settings. Some film historians believe Greed was the first feature-length film shot on location.

Managing a production like Greed was a massive task. The original print of the film ran for 10 hours. Stroheim first cut it down to a six-hour version. This version was intended to be shown over two nights. Later, he and Rex Ingram edited it into a four-hour version. However, the studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer took control of the film. They hired a scriptwriter named June Mathis to cut it further. The final release version was only 2.5 hours long. Stroheim was angry because he felt the studio destroyed his work.

Stroheim's career included many different types of roles.

He directed the film Foolish Wives in 1922. Publicity claimed this was the first film to cost $1 million. He also directed The Merry Widow, which was his most successful commercial film.

His personal history shaped his famous screen presence.

He was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1885. His parents, Benno Stroheim and Johanna Bondy, were observant Jews. In 1909, he emigrated to America. At Ellis Island, he claimed to be a member of the Austrian nobility. He later played many noble characters in his films. Despite his claims, some said he had a lower-class Austrian accent. He eventually became a well-known character actor in both American and French cinema.

As his directing opportunities decreased, Stroheim found success as an actor.

He played the character Rauffenstein in the film La Grande Illusion. He also starred in the 1950 film Sunset Boulevard. In that movie, he played Max von Mayerling. This role was partly based on his own life. His performance earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Because of his stern nature and villainous roles, people called him "the man you love to hate."

Stroheim spent the final years of his life in France. He was admired by the French film industry and neo-Surrealist artists. He wrote novels in French and worked on new film projects. Before he died, he received the French Legion of Honour. This is a very high honor from the French government. He suffered from prostate cancer and became paralyzed.
