The American Film Institute even ranked her as the 17th-greatest female star of classical Hollywood. Gish is credited with pioneering many fundamental techniques for performing on film.

Lillian's journey into performance began during a difficult childhood. She was born in 1893 in Springfield, Ohio. After her father left the family, her mother turned to acting to provide support.

Lillian and her sister Dorothy began performing in a traveling troupe when they were very young. Lillian made her stage debut in 1902 at only nine years old. To support her family, she even worked at a candy and popcorn stand in New York. She also took modeling jobs to pay for voice lessons.

Her transition to cinema occurred through her connection to director D. W. Griffith.

In 1912, her friend Mary Pickford introduced her to Griffith. This led to a contract with Biograph Studios. Lillian often portrayed strong yet suffering heroines in Griffith's films. She starred in major productions like "The Birth of a Nation" in 1915 and "Way Down East" in 1920. She was known for her intense dedication to her roles. In one scene for "Way Down East," she performed in freezing conditions on an ice floe. This extreme commitment actually caused permanent nerve damage in her fingers.

In 1925, Lillian moved to the MGM studio to seek more creative control.

MGM offered her a contract worth $1 million in 1926. However, she turned down much of that money. She requested a lower wage so the studio could use the funds to improve her films. She wanted to hire better screenwriters and more talented actors. This move helped her produce artistic works like "La Bohème" and "The Wind." "The Wind," directed by Victor Sjöström, remains a recognized classic of the silent period.

As the era of "talkies," or films with sound, began, Lillian faced new challenges. The public's tastes were changing rapidly during the early 1930s. Many silent stars were seen as outdated as new styles of acting became popular.

Lillian chose to return to her first love, the theater, for much of this time. She performed in landmark productions like "Hamlet" in 1936. She also found success in film roles later in her life. She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 1946 for "Duel in the Sun."

Lillian's versatility allowed her to work across many different media.
