Marcellus began his political rise through several important Roman offices. In 226 BC, he was elected as a curule aedile. Aediles were officials who managed public buildings and festivals. They also enforced public order in the city. Around this same time, he became an augur. An augur was a person who interpreted omens from the gods. These roles served as stepping stones for Roman noblemen. By the age of 40, he was already an acclaimed soldier and official. His early career reached a peak with his first consulship in 222 BC.

One of his most famous moments happened during the Gallic War. In 225 BC, the Insubrian Gauls declared war on Rome. Marcellus fought in this conflict as a soldier. By 222 BC, he was elected consul to lead the Roman forces. During the Battle of Clastidium, he faced the Gallic king, Viridomarus. The two leaders engaged in single combat, which is a one-on-one fight. Marcellus killed the king using his spear and the force of his horse. He then took the king's armor as a trophy.

This trophy was known as the spolia opima, meaning "richest spoils." This was the most prestigious award a Roman general could ever earn. To qualify, a general had to kill the opposing leader in single combat. Marcellus dedicated this armor to the god Jupiter Feretrius. Some historians, like Polybius, do not mention this specific prize. The writer Plutarch may have exaggerated the story to make Marcellus look like a hero. Despite these debates, the victory helped the Romans defeat the Gauls. The war ended after the Gauls surrendered at Mediolanum.

Marcellus returned to prominence during the Second Punic War. This war was fought against Hannibal and the forces of Carthage. In 216 BC, Marcellus was elected as a praetor. A praetor was a high-ranking magistrate or army commander. After a massive Roman defeat at Cannae, Marcellus helped defend the city of Nola. This victory provided a moral boost to the Roman people. It was the first time Hannibal's advance was checked. Marcellus later served as a proconsul and was elected consul for a third time in 214 BC.

In 214 BC, Marcellus was sent to the island of Sicily. The city of Syracuse was a major target during this campaign. Syracuse was a Greek city with advanced defenses. The famous inventor Archimedes had created military machines to protect the city. These devices made the Roman siege very difficult. The siege lasted for two long years. Marcellus had to fight both the Syracusan forces and the Carthaginians. He eventually found a weak point in the city's fortifications.

In the summer of 212 BC, the Romans finally captured Syracuse. Marcellus led a group of soldiers in a night attack. They stormed the walls and opened the city gates. During the chaos of the battle, Archimedes was killed. Plutarch notes that Marcellus expressed regret over this death. As the Romans took control, they collected vast amounts of Greek art and architecture. This event had a huge impact on the future of Rome. The influx of Greek culture helped shape Roman society for centuries. Marcellus died in battle in 208 BC. He left a legacy of military conquest and significant cultural change.
