He was a French mathematician, physicist, and military officer. He also served as a high-level politician during the French Revolution. Carnot is best remembered for his work in science and his leadership in war. He helped organize the French army during a very difficult time. Carnot's early life was defined by intense study. He was born on May 13, 1753, in Nolay, Burgundy. As a young student, he focused on philosophy and the classics. He later studied logic, mathematics, and theology under the Abbé Bison. These studies prepared him for a career in engineering and artillery. In 1771, he entered the École royale du génie de Mézières. There, he studied geometry, mechanics, hydraulics, and geography.

As a scientist, Carnot made important discoveries about energy. In 1784, he published his "Essay on Machines." This work explored how energy is used in moving objects. He provided early proofs regarding kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion. He showed that kinetic energy is lost during certain types of collisions. Later, in 1803, he wrote a pioneering book on projective geometry. This field of mathematics focuses on how shapes appear from different viewpoints.

Carnot's political career rose during the French Revolution. He was elected to the National Convention in 1792. In 1793, he joined the Committee of Public Safety. This group was a powerful committee that directed the French war effort. Carnot served as one of the Ministers of War. He worked to reorganize the army and enforce strict discipline. He was once a friend of the leader Maximilien Robespierre. However, Carnot eventually broke away from Robespierre's radical political methods.

His most famous achievement was his military organization.

He introduced a system called the levée en masse, or mass conscription. This system required citizens to serve in the military. It allowed the French army to grow very quickly. In mid-1793, the army had 645,000 troops. By September 1794, the force had grown to 1.5 million men. Because of this massive growth, he was called the "Organizer of Victory."

Carnot also managed the difficult task of supplying this huge army. He had to find materials for weapons and gear. When copper was scarce, he ordered church bells to be melted into guns. He used chemistry to find saltpeter for making gunpowder. He also found new ways to tan leather for soldier boots. Beyond supplies, he was a talented military engineer. He developed the "Carnot wall," a system of fortifications. This design was used widely across Europe during the 19th century.

His life involved many changes in government. He was part of the initial Directory in 1795. Later, he was ousted during the Coup of 18 Fructidor in 1797. This event forced him into exile in Geneva. He eventually returned to France and served under Napoleon Bonaparte. He worked as the Minister of the Interior during the Hundred Days. After the Bourbon Restoration, he was exiled once again. He died in Magdeburg, Prussia, in 1823.
