Marcion was a thinker from a place called Pontus. This place is in modern-day Turkey. Some people called him a ship master. He traveled to the big city of Rome. He gave a large gift of money to the people there.

Marcion had a very unique way of looking at God. He believed in two different gods. He thought one god made the physical world. He called this god the Demiurge. He believed this god was strict and sometimes angry. Marcion taught that Jesus came from a different god. He called this second god the Heavenly Father. He said this god was full of love and mercy.

He also made his own list of holy books. This list is called a canon. It had ten letters from Paul the Apostle. It also had a book like the Gospel of Luke. Some scholars think his books were very old. Others think he changed them to fit his ideas.

Other church leaders did not like his views. They said his ideas were wrong. They even asked him to leave the church in the year 144. Still, his group of followers grew very large. They stayed around for many years.
