Paul wrote the letter to help a man named Onesimus. Onesimus had been a slave to Philemon. He ran away, perhaps after stealing money. While he was away, Onesimus met Paul. Onesimus became a Christian because of Paul. Paul calls him a "beloved brother."

Paul asked Philemon to welcome Onesimus back. He did not want Philemon to treat him as a slave. Instead, he asked Philemon to treat him as a brother in faith. Paul even offered to pay any money that Onesimus owed.

This letter is very short. The Greek text has only 335 words. Most scholars believe Paul really wrote it. It teaches about forgiveness and how to treat others. It shows how early Christians tried to live with love and kindness.
