He spent his whole career making aircraft for people to fly. He was also a leader in politics for many years. He served in both houses of the French Parliament from 1951 until 1986. He was a very important person in the history of aviation.

His journey into flight started with careful study and invention. He studied electrical engineering and attended the Supaéro school. During World War I, he worked at a research laboratory. He invented a new kind of aircraft propeller there. A propeller is the spinning part that pulls a plane through the air. In 1916, he helped start a company to make fighter planes. Later, in 1928, he founded his own company called Société des Avions Marcel Bloch. This company built its very first plane in 1930.

Life became very difficult for him during World War II. The Nazi regime occupied France and controlled the aviation industry. In 1940, Marcel refused to work with the occupiers in Bordeaux. Because of this choice, he was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp. He was held there in solitary confinement and treated very harshly. He stayed in the camp until it was liberated on 11 April 1945. When he finally returned to Paris, his health was very poor. He had a hard time walking and doctors feared he would not recover.

Marcel showed great strength by starting over after the war. He changed his name from Bloch to Dassault. This new name came from a code name used by his brother. His brother was a General in the French Resistance. The name was a play on the French words for "assault tank." In 1971, his company grew even larger when it bought Breguet. This created a new group called Avions Marcel Dassault–Breguet Aviation. He was later inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame in 1973.

Today, we can see his legacy in many places.
