Manuel Azaña Díaz was a very important leader in Spain.

He was born in Alcalá de Henares into a wealthy family. He studied very hard at several big universities. He earned a law degree in 1897 and a doctorate in 1900. Azaña also worked as a writer and a journalist. He even traveled to Paris in 1911. During World War I, he wrote about the war for newspapers. He was very sympathetic toward the French during that time. He spent many years working in law and politics before his big roles.

In 1931, a new government called the Second Spanish Republic began.

Azaña helped lead this new era. First, he served as the Minister of War. He wanted to make the army more modern and professional. He tried to make the army smaller by having fewer officers. Later, in October 1931, he became the Prime Minister. He led a group of different political parties to help run the country. He believed that all citizens should be equal under the law.

As a leader, Azaña tried to make many big changes. He introduced insurance to help workers if they had accidents. He also wanted to change how schools worked in Spain. He moved schools away from the Church and toward the state. He believed these state schools were better for public health. He also worked on a plan to share land with poor farmers. However, this was a very hard job to finish. Only about 12,000 families actually received land in the first two years. These big changes made some people very unhappy with his work.

Politics in Spain became very difficult and tense during his time. In 1934, Azaña was even arrested after a rebellion. He was not actually part of the rebellion, but the arrest made him famous. He helped organize the Popular Front to win elections in 1936. After that win, he became the President of the Republic in April 1936.

Sadly, a civil war broke out in Spain shortly after. This war brought much violence and many political fights to the country.

Because of the war, Azaña could not stay in his home. He had to leave Madrid and move to different places. He spent some time living in the Montserrat Abbey in the mountains. Eventually, he had to leave Spain and go to France. He lived there in exile because the Republic lost the war. He died in France in 1940 at the age of 60.
