Alfonso XIII was a king who ruled Spain for many years.

He was born on May 17, 1886, at the Royal Palace of Madrid. His father, Alfonso XII, died just one year before the baby was born. This meant Alfonso became the king the moment he entered the world. His mother, Maria Christina of Austria, acted as regent to lead for him. She held this power until he turned sixteen in 1902.

Life as a young king was full of big events. When he was a small child, he became very ill with the flu. Doctors said the sickness attacked his nervous system, but he recovered. In 1906, Alfonso married Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg.

Their wedding day was very dangerous because a man threw a bomb. The royal couple stayed safe because their carriage had special armor. This armor was made by a Polish inventor named Jan Szczepanik. Sadly, the attack killed 30 people and hurt 100 others.

During World War I, Alfonso tried to keep Spain neutral. This means Spain did not join the fighting between nations. Because his family had ties to many countries, he worked to help people. He set up an office at the Royal Palace to help prisoners of war. This office helped them by sending and receiving important letters.

For this hard work, he was even nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 1917. He is still the only monarch ever nominated for this prize. During this time, he also got very sick from the 1918 flu pandemic.

Later, the king faced many hard choices and big problems. He supported a military leader named Miguel Primo de Rivera. This leader took control of the country in a military coup in 1923.

Some people called the king "El Africano" because of his views on Africa. He supported wars in Morocco to try to build a new empire. This led to a very bad defeat called the Disaster of the Annual. Many people felt the king did not care enough about the soldiers.

Eventually, the people of Spain wanted a different way to rule. In April 1931, there were elections to decide the future of the country. The results showed that people wanted a republic instead of a monarchy.

Because of this, Alfonso XIII left Spain voluntarily. This ended the reign of his family in the country. He later lived in other places, including London.
