Alfonso XIII was the King of Spain.

In 1906, Alfonso married Princess Victoria Eugenie. During their wedding, a man threw a bomb.
During World War I, Spain stayed neutral. This means Spain did not fight in the war. Alfonso helped prisoners of war by sending them letters. He was even named for a Nobel Peace Prize for this work.
Later, Alfonso faced many problems. He supported a leader named Miguel Primo de Rivera. This leader took control of the country through a military coup. This was a sudden change in power. People were unhappy with this choice. In 1931, elections were held in Spain. The people chose to have a republic instead of a king. Alfonso left the country and the reign of his family ended.
Alfonso XIII was a king who ruled Spain for many years.

Life as a young king was full of big events. When he was a small child, he became very ill with the flu. Doctors said the sickness attacked his nervous system, but he recovered. In 1906, Alfonso married Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg.
During World War I, Alfonso tried to keep Spain neutral. This means Spain did not join the fighting between nations. Because his family had ties to many countries, he worked to help people. He set up an office at the Royal Palace to help prisoners of war. This office helped them by sending and receiving important letters.
Later, the king faced many hard choices and big problems. He supported a military leader named Miguel Primo de Rivera. This leader took control of the country in a military coup in 1923.
Eventually, the people of Spain wanted a different way to rule. In April 1931, there were elections to decide the future of the country. The results showed that people wanted a republic instead of a monarchy. Because of this, Alfonso XIII left Spain voluntarily. This ended the reign of his family in the country. He later lived in other places, including London.
Alfonso XIII was the King of Spain from his birth in 1886 until 1931.
Alfonso's path to power began with a sudden death. His father, Alfonso XII, died in November 1885. This meant the infant Alfonso became king immediately upon his birth on May 17, 1886. His mother, Maria Christina of Austria, served as regent. A regent is a person who governs a country while the monarch is too young. She held this position until Alfonso reached his sixteenth birthday in 1902.
As he grew, Alfonso's identity became closely tied to the military. He received a military education that shaped his nationalist views. This background influenced how he viewed his role as a leader. In 1906, he married Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg.
World War I presented a complex challenge for the Spanish monarchy. Because Alfonso had family ties to many warring nations, he had to navigate delicate politics. His wife was British and his mother was Austrian. To maintain peace, Alfonso kept Spain neutral during the conflict. He used his position to assist those caught in the war. He established an office in the Royal Palace to help prisoners of war. This office used Spanish diplomatic networks to exchange letters and provide services for captives.
Despite his diplomatic work, Alfonso faced growing criticism at home. He was nicknamed "El Africano," or the African, due to his views on colonial expansion. He supported military efforts in Morocco to build a new empire. This led to the Rif War between 1920 and 1926. A major turningity occurred during the Battle of Annual in 1921. This battle resulted in a massive Spanish defeat known as the Disaster of the Annual. Many citizens felt the king was indifferent to the loss of life. They criticized his perceived lack of empathy toward the soldiers.
Political instability continued to rise throughout the 1920s. Alfonso eventually supported a military coup in 1923. This coup installed Miguel Primo de Rivera as a dictator.
The end of Alfonso's reign came through a democratic process. In April 1931, municipal elections were held across Spain. These elections acted as a plebiscite, which is a direct vote by the people on a specific issue. The results were interpreted as a rejection of the monarchy. This led to the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic on April 14, 1931. Alfonso XIII chose to leave Spain voluntarily. He spent his later years living in other countries, including London.
