Emilio Mola was a major leader during the Spanish Civil War. He was born in Placetas, Cuba, in 1887. His father was an army officer stationed there at the time. This meant Mola grew up in a military family. He later moved to Spain to join the Infantry Academy of Toledo in 1907. He became part of a group called the Africanists. These soldiers fought in colonial wars in Morocco. Mola was very skilled at military affairs. He even received a Military Medal for his service.

As he grew older, Mola held many important jobs. He became a brigadier general by 1927. In 1930, he was the Director-General of Security. This was a political role under King Alfonso XIII. Because of his conservative views, many people did not like him. In early 1936, a new government was elected in Spain. Mola was sent to lead the garrison in Pamplona. He secretly worked with other groups that wanted big changes. By April 1936, he was a leader for the military union in north-central Spain.

In July 1936, Mola helped start a revolt against the government. Many people called him "the Director." This was because he was the main person who made the plans. He sent secret instructions to many different military units. He wanted to create a very strong and disciplined state. He even wrote a plan for how a new government would work. He thought about how to handle land and religion. Even with all his planning, Mola was worried the revolt might fail. He even thought about fleeing to France if things went wrong.

After the revolt began, a civil war started in Spain. The leaders of the revolt were split up. General José Sanjurjo was the top leader at first. But Sanjurjo died in a plane crash on July 20, 1936. After that, Mola led the Nationalist side in the north. He tried to capture the city of Madrid with four columns of troops. Mola said people inside Madrid would help his soldiers. He called these hidden helpers a "fifth column." This was one of the first times anyone used that famous phrase.

During the war, Mola's actions led to many deaths. He oversaw systematic executions in cities that his side captured. More than 40,000 people were killed during this time. On June 3, 1937, Mola died in a plane crash. His plane hit a mountain during bad weather. Some people suspected his death was not an accident. After he died, Francisco Franco became the main leader of the Nationalists. Years later, Franco gave Mola the title of Duke of Mola. This title was eventually taken away in 2022.
