Emilio Mola was a Spanish military leader. He was born in Cuba in 1887. His father was also an army officer. Mola joined the army in Spain in 1907. He fought in wars in Morocco. He became an expert on military matters.

In 1936, Mola helped plan a revolt. This revolt started the Spanish Civil War. People called him "the Director" because he made the plans. He wanted to build a strong state. He led many soldiers in the north of Spain. He tried to take the city of Madrid. He said people inside the city would help his troops. He called these people a "fifth column." This was one of the first times that phrase was used.

During the war, many people were killed. Mola was in charge of many of these deaths. In 1937, Mola died in a plane crash. The weather was very bad that day. Some people thought his death was not an accident. After he died, Francisco Franco became the main leader. Franco later gave Mola a high title. That title was taken away in 2022.
