Mantella are small frogs from the island of Madagascar.

They come in many bright colors. These colors can be red, orange, yellow, blue, or even green. These bright colors are a way to stay safe. This is called aposematism. It means the colors warn predators to stay away. These frogs often have toxins in their skin. They get these toxins by eating certain insects.

Most Mantella frogs live on land. They like many places to live. Some stay in rainforests or swamps. Others live in grasslands or near streams. Some even live near human trash piles.

Females are usually larger than males. Their bodies can be round or slim. Some have smooth skin. Others have bumpy skin. Many species are in danger today. They lose their homes to farming and mining. People also take them for the pet trade. This makes it hard for these frogs to survive.
