Finding the skull was a surprise. In 2008, a bulldozer was working on construction. The machine accidentally cracked the roof of the cave. Researchers from Hebrew University of Jerusalem went to look. They found the skullcap near many other things. They saw stone tools and pieces of charcoal. They also found bones from deer, horses, and bears.

Many experts worked together to study the site. A big team from many universities helped. They included people from Tel Aviv University and Boston University. They also worked with the Geological Survey of Israel. A full excavation started in 2010. This helped them find even more details. They studied the tools and the bones very carefully.

The skull belongs to an adult human. It is almost a complete skullcap, or calvaria. The brain size was about 1,100 mL. This is smaller than a modern human brain. Most modern brains are about 1,400 mL. The skull has a bun-shaped back part. It also has a flat area on the top. These shapes are very interesting to scientists.

This fossil is about 54,700 years old. It is the oldest find in West Asia from that time. It comes from a time after humans left Africa. Scientists think it is related to people in Europe. It might even be a mix with Neanderthals. The warm weather makes it hard to find DNA. Still, Manot 1 tells a huge story about us.
