Herto Man refers to a group of ancient human remains found in Ethiopia. These fossils are very important because they help us understand how humans changed over time.

Before this discovery, there was a long gap in the fossil record. Scientists did not have many fossils from between 300,000 and 100,000 years ago. Finding these remains helped fill that empty space in our history. They show us how our ancestors lived and grew in Africa.

These people lived in a place with a freshwater lake.

They used many different stone tools to survive. Some tools were made with a method called the Levallois technique. This is a way of shaping stone used in the Middle Stone Age. They also used older styles like the Acheulean tradition. They made these tools from rocks like obsidian and basalt. These tools helped them butcher animals like hippo and bovines.

In 1997, researchers found these fossils in the Afar Triangle.

They found remains from at least 12 different individuals. Scientists used a method called argon-argon dating to find their age. This showed the remains are between 154,000 and 160,000 years old. The fossils include several different parts of the body. One major piece is a nearly complete skull. They also found the skull of a child who was 6 or 7 years old.

Some scientists gave these people a special name. They called them Homo sapiens idaltu. The word idaltu means "elder" in the local Afar language.

They thought these humans were a middle step in evolution. They believed they were between older humans and modern humans like us. However, other researchers have argued about this name. Some think the Herto remains are already modern humans. Others believe the classification is not quite right.

Looking at the skulls tells us even more about them. The Herto skulls have a high, rounded shape. This is called a high cranial vault. This shape is something we see in modern humans today. Some skulls also have strange marks on them. These marks look like they were made by stone tools. They might show that these people had special ways to honor the dead. This could be an early form of a mortuary ritual.
