Manoel de Oliveira was a famous film director from Portugal.

He was born on December 11, 1908, in Porto. His family was very wealthy and owned many large businesses. His father even built the first electric light bulbs in Portugal. Oliveira spent most of his adult life working in these family factories. He only made films when his business work allowed him to. This balance between business and art shaped his unique career.

Making a film is a long and careful job. Oliveira began by watching how cities lived through documentaries. In 1931, he made his first film called Douro, Faina Fluvial. This was a city-symphony film about the Douro River in Porto. These films show daily life through images instead of a story. He also used real people instead of actors in some movies. For example, he used real street children in his 1942 film, Aniki-Bóbó. This film showed children who sometimes lied or cheated like adults.

Oliveira's journey into movies started very early in his life. In 1927, he tried to make a film about World War I. He was only a teenager when he started this work. Later, he went to an acting school in Italy. He even worked as an extra in a film called Fátima Milagrosa. He was also an actor in a sound film called A Canção de Lisboa. Even though he loved acting, he eventually chose to direct. He wanted to show the real world on the screen.

His career changed a lot during the 1960s and 1970s. In 1963, he made a film called Rite of Spring. This film showed a traditional play performed by villagers. It helped him gain fame all over the world. However, life was not always easy for him. The government in Portugal had strict rules called censorship. Because of his ideas, Oliveira was even arrested and jailed for ten days. After the Carnation Revolution in 1974, he found more freedom to make art.

Oliveira was a very busy filmmaker for a very long time. He was the only director to work from the silent era into the digital age. Even after he turned 100, he made about one film every year.
