Mangrove forests are special wetlands found in warm, tropical areas.

They grow in the intertidal zone, which is the area between high and low tides. About 80 different species of mangroves exist in these places. These trees must be very tough to survive there. They live in salty water and soil with very little oxygen. They also cannot live in freezing temperatures. This is why you only find them in warm parts of the world.

These trees have a very interesting way of working.

Their roots often look like tall stilts. These roots slow down the movement of tidal waters. When the water slows, fine sediment settles on the ground. This helps the forest build up new land over time. The roots also act as a protective barrier. They help stop coastal erosion from big waves and storm surges.

Scientists have studied these forests for a long time. They want to know how these ecosystems work so well. Mangroves are important for the flow of energy and matter. They can store and recycle nutrients and wastes. They also help prevent floods and runoff. These forests are known as major blue carbon systems. This means they store huge amounts of carbon in the wet soil. This helps regulate the Earth's climate.

They can be found in 118 different countries and territories. In 2010, the total area was about 137,600 square kilometers. Asia has the largest share of these forests at 38.7 percent. The largest mangrove forest in the world is the Sundarbans.

It is located in a delta on the Bay of Bengal. This huge forest covers 10,000 square kilometers. It is a home for the endangered Bengal tiger.

Many different living things rely on the mangrove forest.

Even though there are few types of trees, many animals live there. The roots provide a nursery for young fish to grow safely. You might find oysters, sponges, and crabs living among the roots.

Large animals, called marine megafauna, also use this habitat. Some forests can host as many as 174 different species of these large animals. It is a busy and crowded place for life to thrive.
