One famous shape is the Mandelbrot set. It is a special kind of math shape called a fractal. A fractal is a shape with a very messy boundary. If you zoom in on it, you see more detail. This detail keeps appearing no matter how much you zoom.

You will see tiny parts that look like the big shape. This is called self-similarity.

Scientists first drew this set in 1978. Later, Benoit Mandelbrot made high-quality pictures of it. He worked at a research center called IBM. The set comes from a math rule. We pick a number and follow a set of steps. Some numbers stay small during these steps. Other numbers grow very large and fly off to infinity. The Mandelbrot set is made of the numbers that stay small.

Mathematicians like Adrien Douady and John Hubbard studied it deeply. They helped name the set to honor Mandelbrot's work.
