Math can help us study how numbers and shapes work together.

Some special rules are called the Cauchy–Riemann equations. These rules help us understand complex functions. A complex function uses complex numbers. These numbers have a real part and an imaginary part.

The equations check if a function is differentiable. This means the function is smooth and changes in a steady way. If a function follows these rules, it is called conformal. This means it preserves angles. When you move or stretch the shape, the angles stay the same.

These rules also help us see patterns in nature. They can describe how a fluid flows in a plane. In this view, one part of the function shows the speed. The other part shows the path of the flow. The paths and the speed lines always meet at right angles. These equations also help scientists study magnets and electric fields. Many famous thinkers worked on these ideas. Jean le Rond d'Alembert first showed these rules. Later, Leonhard Euler and Augustin-Louis Cauchy used them. Bernhard Riemann also studied them in 1851.
