Mandelbrot set

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

The Mandelbrot set is a famous shape in mathematics. It is a special kind of shape called a fractal.

Fractals are known for having very messy and complex boundaries. If you look closely at the edge, you will find more detail. This detail keeps appearing no matter how much you zoom in.

You might see tiny parts that look like the whole shape. This repeating pattern is called self-similarity. It is often called a beautiful example of math.

This shape works through a simple math rule. You start with a number and follow a set of steps. We call this process iteration.

We take a number and use it to find a new number. Then we use that new number to find the next one. Some numbers stay small during these steps. These numbers stay within a certain distance from zero. Other numbers grow very large and fly off to infinity. The Mandelbrot set is made only of the numbers that stay small.

People have studied this shape for a long time. At the start of the 20th century, Pierre Fatou and Gaston Julia studied complex dynamics. This is the field where the Mandelbrot set lives. In 1978, Robert W. Brooks and Peter Matelski first defined and drew the set. They were studying something called Kleinian groups. Later, in 1980, Benoit Mandelbrot made high-quality pictures of it. He was working at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York.

Many mathematicians helped us understand this set. Adrien Douady and John H. Hubbard did important work in 1985. They proved many basic rules about how the set works. They also gave it the name Mandelbrot set to honor his work.

Other people like Heinz-Otto Peitgen and Peter Richter showed it to the world. They used books and traveling exhibits to share it. In 1985, an article in Scientific American showed how to compute it. This helped the set become famous in the mid-1980s.

Today, we see the Mandelbrot set in many places. It is a popular demo for computer graphics. This became possible when personal computers became strong enough to show it.

The set links to other shapes called Julia sets. If you change the starting number, you can find a Julia set. The set also connects to how things change in math. We call this the bifurcation locus. This means the boundary is where math behavior changes quickly.
