Maize is a tall, stout grass.

It grows a single stem. This stem can be 4 meters tall. The plant has separate male and female flowers. The male flowers are at the top. We call this part a tassel. The tassel lets out pollen. The wind carries the pollen down.

Lower on the stem, the female flowers grow. They look like soft silk. When pollen hits the silk, it makes a kernel. A kernel is a seed. Many kernels grow on an ear. We often call this an ear of corn.

Kernels come in many colors. Most are yellow or white. Some are red, blue, or even black. People made maize from a wild plant. We call that plant teosinte. Indigenous peoples in Mexico grew it 9,000 years ago.

Today, maize is a very big crop. In 2020, the world made 1.1 billion tonnes. We use it for many things. We make food like tortillas and polenta. We also use it for animal feed. Some maize is even used to make fuel.
