Maitri is a special word from ancient India. It refers to feelings like benevolence and loving-kindness. It also means being a friend to others. People use this word to describe having good will. It is about having an active interest in others. This idea is very important in many old texts. You can find it in the Upanishads and Jain Sutras.

Many people practice maitri through a type of meditation. This is a way to train the mind to be kind. A person might sit quietly and repeat certain phrases. They might say, "May you be happy." They might also say, "May you be free from suffering." Some people focus on compassion to relieve suffering. Others focus on loving-kindness to wish for happiness.

This practice often follows a specific order. A person starts by sending kindness to themselves. Next, they send it to people they love. Then, they try to be kind to neutral people. After that, they focus on difficult people. Finally, they send kindness to all living beings. This helps to remove negative feelings like hate. It also helps to stop greed or clinging.

The history of these ideas goes back a long time. Some traditions say these virtues existed before the Buddha. Ancient Indian sages taught these virtues long ago. These ideas are also found in Hindu texts like the Yoga Sutras. Jainism also includes these feelings in its sacred books. The Buddha did not claim these were his own unique ideas. He shared them as part of a larger tradition.

There are many different ways to share this kindness. Some texts describe sending it in all directions. This includes up, down, north, south, east, and west. It can be sent to all men and all women. It can even be sent to all deities or all creatures. Some people believe this practice brings many benefits. It might help a person sleep easily and dream well. It may also help a person feel bright and calm.
