society Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Mairead Maguire is a peace activist. She comes from Northern Ireland.

Long ago, there was much fighting in her home. This was called the Troubles. In 1976, a sad car crash happened. Three children in Mairead's family died in the crash. This tragedy made her want to help. She joined a woman named Betty Williams. Together, they started a group called Women for Peace. This group later became the Peace People.

Mairead led many large marches. These marches helped many people ask for peace. In 1977, she and Betty won the Nobel Peace Prize. This is a very big prize for people who help the world. Mairead was only 32 years old. This made her the youngest winner at that time.

Mairead still works very hard today. She helps groups that protect human rights. She speaks out against wars in many places. She wants people to use talk instead of fighting. She believes in peace and justice for everyone.
