He has also been the fourth chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) since 2004. Abbas is a member of the Fatah political party. He was elected as the chairman of Fatah in 2009. His leadership involves managing complex relations between Palestinian groups and the international community.

Abbas's political career involves navigating many different types of governance and diplomacy. He first served as the prime minister of the Palestinian Authority from March to September 2003. Before that role, he led the PLO Negotiations Affairs Department. As president, he must manage the Fatah-controlled areas of the Palestinian territories. He also works to represent Palestinian interests in international legal and political forums. This includes signing applications for Palestine to join the International Criminal Court in late 2014.

His leadership has seen various stages of political stability and conflict. Abbas was elected president on January 9, 2005, receiving 63% of the vote.

After his initial term ended in 2009, he extended his presidency. In December 2009, the PLO Central Council voted to keep him in office indefinitely. This decision was disputed by Hamas, a major political rival. However, in April 2014, Hamas and Fatah reached an agreement to form a Unity Government. This agreement led Hamas to recognize Abbas's office.

Abbas has been a central figure in peace negotiations and diplomatic efforts. In 1993, he signed the Oslo I Accord on behalf of the PLO.

He later co-authored the Beilin–Abu Mazen agreement in 1995. This document was intended to create a framework for an Israeli–Palestinian peace deal. Abbas has frequently advocated for a two-state solution. This concept proposes that two separate states would live side by side. He has often called for an end to violence and a return to peaceful resistance.

His early life and education provided the foundation for his later work. Mahmoud Rida Abbas was born on November 15, 1935, in Safed.

During the 1948 Palestine war, his family fled to Syria. He graduated from the University of Damascus with a law degree. Later, he attended Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow. There, he earned a Candidate of Sciences degree, which is similar to a PhD. His doctoral work focused on the relationship between Nazism and Zionism.

Abbas has faced significant challenges and criticism throughout his tenure. He has dealt with internal power struggles, such as his conflict with Yasser Arafat in 2003. During that time, Abbas served as prime minister but struggled to gain control over security services. He also faced opposition from militant groups like Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement. These groups often disagreed with his pragmatic policies. Additionally, Abbas has faced personal accusations regarding corruption and the way he discusses history.
