Ismail Haniyeh was a prominent Palestinian politician and a high-ranking leader within Hamas. He held several major leadership positions over several decades. From 2006 to 2014, he served as the prime minister of the Palestinian National Authority. He was also the first Hamas leader in the Gaza Strip from 2007 until 2017. Later, he became the third chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau in 2017. His life and career were deeply connected to the political struggles of the Palestinian people.

Haniyeh's early life was shaped by the 1948 Palestine war. He was born in the al-Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip around 1962 or 1963. His parents had fled or been expelled from Al-Jura, which is now part of Ashkelon. As a student, Haniyeh studied Arabic literature at the Islamic University of Gaza. He graduated in 1987, the same time the First Intifada began. This was a period of protests against the Israeli occupation. During this time, Haniyeh became actively involved with Hamas. His activism led to several short periods of imprisonment by Israeli military courts. In 1992, he was exiled to Lebanon along with other Hamas leaders. He lived in Marj al-Zahour for over a year before returning to Gaza in 1993. Upon his return, he served as a dean at the Islamic University.

In 2006, Haniyeh's political influence grew significantly. He led the Hamas "List of Change and Reform" during the Palestinian legislative elections. His list won the election, and he was sworn in as prime minister on March 29, 2006. This victory led to immediate international tension. Israel implemented economic sanctions against the Palestinian Authority. Israel stopped transferring an estimated $50 million per month in tax receipts. The United States also demanded the return of $50 million in unexpended foreign aid. Haniyeh responded by calling for direct negotiations with the American government. He also offered a long-term truce and accepted a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders. However, the United States did not respond to these offers and maintained its boycott.

Internal Palestinian politics also created major challenges for Haniyeh. A conflict grew between the Hamas and Fatah political factions. In June 2007, President Mahmoud Abbas dismissed Haniyeh from his position as prime minister. This happened during the Battle of Gaza. Haniyeh did not recognize this dismissal and continued to exercise authority in the Gaza Strip. This split meant that Abbas ruled the West Bank, while Haniyeh led the Gaza Strip. Haniyeh eventually resigned in February 2007 to help form a national unity government. This government included both Fatah and Hamas politicians. However, the unity was short-lived, and the two sides remained divided.

In 2017, Haniyeh moved into a new role as the chairman of the Hamas Political Bureau. He replaced Khaled Mashal in this position. Because of his new role, he relocated from the Gaza Strip to Doha, Qatar. As a leader based in Qatar, he met with many international figures. He met with Turkish Minister of Culture Numan Kurtulmuş in 2012 and Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in 2012. Some diplomats viewed him as a more pragmatic or moderate figure within the organization. In 2018, the United States placed him on a list of specially designated global terrorists. Despite these labels, he continued to represent Hamas on the global stage.

The final years of Haniyeh's life were marked by intense international legal and military developments. In May 2024, Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, announced plans to seek arrest warrants for Haniyeh. The investigation involved allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Palestine. This occurred following the October 7 attacks launched by Hamas. During this period, Haniyeh was also involved in leading cease-fire negotiations with Israel. On July 31, 2024, Haniyeh was assassinated in Tehran, Iran. An explosive device was planted in his guesthouse. It is believed that Israeli Mossad agents were responsible for the attack.

Haniyeh's career reflects the complex history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. His journey from a refugee camp to a major political leader shows the shifting power structures in the region. His leadership spanned different eras of Palestinian governance and international diplomacy. The transition of power in Hamas, such as when Yahya Sinwar succeeded him in Gaza, shows how the organization evolves. His life remains a central part of the history of modern Middle Eastern politics.
