His performances have contributed to films that grossed over $3.3 billion worldwide. In 2019, Time magazine recognized his impact by naming him one of the 100 most influential people in the world. Similarly, The New York Times ranked him among the 25 greatest actors of the 21st century. He has built a career characterized by immense versatility and critical success across many different media formats.

Ali's path to professional acting involved significant academic and personal transitions. He was born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore on February 16, 1974, in Oakland, California. He originally attended Saint Mary's College of California on a basketball scholarship. While playing for the SMC Gaels, he used the name "Hershal Gilmore." However, he eventually became disenchanted with a sports career due to the treatment of athletes. This shift led him toward the arts, specifically after participating in a staging of Spunk. He later earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in 2000.

His professional identity also underwent a notable change regarding his name. For much of his early career, he was credited by his full birth name, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali. In 2010, he transitioned to using the shorter professional name, Mahershala Ali. This decision was prompted by practical concerns rather than pressure from agents. He was informed that his full name was too long to fit on a film poster for The Place Beyond the Pines. He chose the shorter version because he did not want to use the initials "M. Ali."

Ali's acting career includes many distinct types of roles and media. He gained early recognition in the science fiction series The 4400, playing Richard Tyler. He later moved into major film roles, such as Tizzy in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. He is also well-known for his work in television dramas like House of Cards and True Detective. Beyond live-action, he has provided voices for animated films, including the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse series. He has even expanded into the digital realm by playing Cutter Wade in the Madden NFL 18 video game.

His accolades are among the most significant in the entertainment industry. Ali has won two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor. He won his first for his role as Juan in the film Moonlight in 2016. He won his second for playing Don Shirley in the 2018 film Green Book. These wins made him the first Black actor to win two Academy Awards in the same category. He is also the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar.

His honors also include a Primetime Emmy Award for producing the program We Are the Dream: The Kids of the Oakland MLK Oratorical Fest.

In addition to acting, Ali has explored a career in music. During the late 2000s, he was signed to the Bay Area label Hieroglyphics Imperium. He recorded rap music under the stage name Prince Ali. He released two studio albums: Corner Ensemble in 2006 and Curb Side Service in 2007. While he released this music, he chose not to tour so he could focus on his acting work. He has since appeared as a guest on albums by artists such as Hus Kingpin and Riz Ahmed.

Ali's life and work are also connected to his personal beliefs and social advocacy. He converted to Islam in 2000 and became an Ahmadiyya Muslim in 2001. He has used his platform to engage with global issues. In 2023, he signed the Artists4Ceasefire letter regarding the war in Gaza. He also used social media to support Palestinian poet Mohammed al-Qudwa by encouraging donations for his family. Through his acting, music, and activism, Ali continues to influence modern culture.
