While most magnolias rely on beetles for pollination, Liriodendron is pollinated by bees.

History shows how our understanding of these plants has changed over time. In the 18th and 19th centuries, botanists like Antonii Laurentii de Jussieu provided the first formal descriptions. Later, Bentham and Hooker organized the family into three tribes: Wintereae, Magnolieae, and Schizandreae. In 1927, a researcher named Dandy proposed a new system with eleven genera. For many years, Dandy's model was widely accepted. However, the end of the 20th century brought the development of DNA sequencing. This technology changed everything. By analyzing molecular data, such as cpDNA sequences, scientists discovered that many traditional groupings were not accurate. This has led to a continuous rearrangement of how we classify the family.

Today, the Magnoliaceae are spread across much of the world.
