The city is named after a nearby place called Mount Magnitnaya. This mountain was a geological anomaly. This means it was very unusual. The mountain was made of almost pure iron ore. This ore was about 55% to 60% iron. Because of this, the city became home to the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. This is the largest iron and steel works in all of Russia.

The city takes its name from Mount Magnitnaya. This mountain was a geological anomaly. It consisted of almost entirely iron ore. The ore contained between 55% and 60% iron. This massive resource led to the creation of the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works. This facility is the largest iron and steel works in Russia. It remains the central driver of the local economy.

The history of the area began in 1743. It was originally founded as part of the Orenburg Line of forts. In 1752, two entrepreneurs named Tverdysh and Myasnikov began exploring the region for mining. They petitioned Empress Elizabeth to secure Mount Magnitnaya for themselves. Her acceptance in 1759 allowed iron-ore production to begin. The settlement eventually grew to include the Church of the Holy Trinity.

In 1928, the Soviet Union sought to modernize the city's industrial capacity. A delegation traveled to Cleveland, Ohio, to consult with an American company. They planned to copy the U.S. Steel mill found in Gary, Indiana. This project became a major showpiece of Soviet achievement. The new plant reached a capacity of over four million tons annually. However, many workers were former peasants with little industrial experience. To help, several hundred foreign specialists arrived to direct the work. This included an architectural team led by the German Ernst May.

Urban planning in Magnitogorsk underwent several changes. May originally proposed a linear city design. This plan featured superblock neighborhoods running parallel to the factory. A greenbelt of greenery was meant to separate living areas from industry. Planners hoped to minimize travel time for workers. However, construction started before the plans were finished. The large factory and cleansing lakes left little room for the linear design. Consequently, the city developed a more "rope-like" shape instead.

The city's status changed significantly during the 20th century. In 1931, it officially received city status. During the 1930s, it was modeled after Gary, Indiana, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1937, the city was declared a closed city. Foreigners were required to leave the area during this period. This status lasted until the perestroika movement under the Gorbachev administration. During World War II, the city was a vital steel supplier. Its location east of the Urals kept it safe from the German Army.

Magnitogorsk faces modern environmental and social challenges. The city was once ranked among the most polluted places in the world. Pollutants include lead, sulfur dioxide, and heavy metals. In 2007, a survey noted that only 1% of local children were in good health. However, plant managers have since upgraded much of their equipment. These upgrades reduced emissions by about 60%. Today, the local iron-ore reserves are depleting. The city must now import raw materials from northern Kazakhstan.

Despite industrial challenges, the city has a rich cultural and sporting life. It is home to the Magnitogorsk State Technical University. Residents can visit the Pushkin Drama Theatre or the Opera and Ballet House. Religious diversity is visible through the Great Mosque and the Church of the Ascension of the Lord.
