Many people call it "the Garden" or use the initials "MSG." It is a place where people gather for many different events. You might go there to watch professional ice hockey or basketball. It also hosts boxing, wrestling, and large circus shows. Many people visit to see their favorite musicians perform in concert.

It is actually the second-busiest music arena in the whole world.

Watching a game at the Garden is a big experience. The arena sits in Midtown Manhattan, right above Pennsylvania Station.

Because it is built above a busy train station, it was a huge engineering feat. The building is part of a larger area called Pennsylvania Plaza. Inside, the space is designed so fans can see the action clearly. Some newer parts even have walkways hanging from the ceiling. These let fans look directly down at the games below.

There have been four different buildings named Madison Square Garden. The first two opened in 1879 and 1890 on East 26th Street. The second building had a tall tower that looked like a bell tower in Spain. A third Garden opened in 1925 at 50th Street. A man named Tex Rickard helped build it, and people called it "The House That Tex Built."

This third building stayed open until the current one was ready in 1968.

The current Garden opened on February 11, 1968. It is the oldest major sports building in the New York area.

It is home to the New York Knicks basketball team and the New York Rangers hockey team. The New York Liberty also played there for many years. To keep the teams at the Garden, the city has a special tax agreement. This agreement means the teams must play their home games at this specific arena.

Because the building is old, owners have spent a lot of money to fix it. They did a large renovation in 1991 that cost $200 million. They also finished a massive $1 billion renovation between 2011 and 2013. These projects added new cushioned seats and better lights. They also added new ways to eat and better rooms for the players.
