It sits halfway between New Zealand and Antarctica. The island belongs to Tasmania, which is part of Australia.

The island has two big high parts. These are called plateaus. A low, narrow strip of land joins them. The highest points are Mount Elder and Mounts Hamilton and Fletcher.

Many royal penguins live here. They come to the island to make nests every year.

The island is very special to scientists. It sits where two huge plates of the Earth meet. These are the Australian plate and the Pacific plate. The moving plates pushed the ocean floor up. This made the island rise above the sea. It shows rocks from deep inside the Earth. This is why it is a World Heritage Site.
