People called him the "King of Comedy" during his long career. He was born Michael Sinnott in Danville, Quebec, in 1880. He later moved to New York City to work in films. There, he took the professional name Mack Sennett. He worked as an actor, singer, dancer, and director. He even played a silly version of Sherlock Holmes eleven times.

Sennett is best known for creating slapstick comedy. This style uses physical jokes to make people laugh. He became famous for custard pie fights and fast car chases.

One of his most famous groups was the Keystone Cops. He also created the Sennett Bathing Beauties. These were groups of women who appeared in his comedy shorts. He even made "Kid Comedies," which were like early versions of Our Gang films. His work helped define the funny "flickers" of the silent film era.

In 1912, Sennett helped start Keystone Studios in Edendale, California.

This studio was very special because it had the first fully enclosed film stage. This meant filmmakers could control the environment inside. Later, in 1915, he joined forces with other big names like D. W. Griffith. By 1917, he organized his own company called Mack Sennett Comedies Corporation. He wanted to make even more ambitious short films and feature-length movies. His studio was often called "Hollywood's Fun Factory."

Many famous movie stars got their start working for Sennett.

Some of these legends include Charlie Chaplin and Bing Crosby. Other stars were Mabel Normand, Harold Lloyd, and Gloria Swanson. He also worked with W. C. Fields and Roscoe Arbuckle. In 1928, he was a leader in the change to sound films. He released the first talking two-reel comedy called "The Lion's Roar." Even though he faced hard times, he remained a major figure in movies.

Making movies was not always easy for Sennett. He struggled with money during the Great Depression. He also had a hard time when movies moved from silent to sound. Some of his early films were lost because they were not stored well. However, the film industry still honored his great work. In 1938, he received an honorary Academy Award. The Academy called him a "master of fun" and a "comedy genius." His life showed how much hard work goes into making the world laugh.
