Macaques are a very large and successful group of monkeys. There are 23 different species in this group. They are found in many places like Asia, North Africa, and even parts of Europe.

These monkeys are very smart and can live in many different homes. Some live in hot rainforests in Southeast Asia. Others live in dry mountains in places like Pakistan or Afghanistan. Some even live in cities near people. Because they can live in so many places, they have a very wide range.

Macaques have a clever way to find and store food. Most of them are frugivorous, which means they prefer to eat fruit. They also eat things like seeds, leaves, flowers, and tree bark. Some species eat even more, like insects or small mammals. For example, a southern pig-tailed macaque in Malaysia eats about 70 large rats each year.

To help them eat, they have large pouches in their cheeks. These pouches act like little pockets to carry extra food. This allows them to gather food quickly and eat it later.

These monkeys live in social groups called troops. A typical troop might have between 20 and 50 members. These groups include adult males, adult females, juveniles, and infants.

The groups are often organized around dominant females. While males can be very strong, the order of who is in charge often shifts. Females usually stay with the group they were born into. However, young males often leave their birth group to find new ones. This can be a hard job, and some males stay alone for a long time.

Scientists have studied macaques for a long time because they are so much like humans. They have similar ways of thinking and feeling. In 2018, scientists in China even used a special method to create the first two crab-eating macaque clones. These two monkeys were named Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua.

Because they are so similar to us, macaques are often used in medical research. This helps scientists learn more about how brains and bodies work. However, this type of testing has led to some species, like the long-tailed macaque, becoming endangered.

Living near humans can be tricky for macaques. Some macaques are synanthropic, which means they have learned to live alongside people. They might raid gardens for tasty treats like mangoes, bananas, or tomatoes.

In places like Florida, rhesus macaques live in parks where people visit. While it might look fun to feed them, macaques can become aggressive. They can also carry diseases, like the herpes B virus, which can be very dangerous to humans. This is why macaques are not suitable to be pets. We must be careful and respectful when we share space with them.
