Most of them eat plants like fruit, seeds, and bark. They might eat nearly 99 different kinds of plants. Sometimes they eat small things like insects or bird eggs. If they live near people, they might eat human food or trash. This helps them survive in many different places.

Learning about these monkeys has helped humans for a long time. Because they are similar to us, scientists study them.

This research helped create vaccines for polio and smallpox. It also helped make medicine for HIV/AIDS. One rhesus macaque even became the first primate astronaut in 1948. Scientists have also studied them in places like Puerto Rico. They live on islands like Cayo Santiago for research.

There are many different types of rhesus macaques. Some are called Indian rhesus macaques and some are Chinese.

Scientists have found many subspecies in different areas. For example, the Tibetan rhesus macaque lives in Tibet. The Indochinese rhesus macaque lives in places like Thailand and Vietnam. In Florida, there is a group of about 550 to 600 monkeys. These monkeys were brought there by a boat operator named Colonel Tooey. He released them around 1938 to be a tourist attraction.

Living in a group is very important for a macaque. They live in large groups called troops. A single troop can have 20 to 200 members.

These groups are matrilineal, which means they follow female family members. The monkeys talk to each other using many ways. They use facial expressions and loud sounds. They also use body postures and gestures to communicate. This helps the whole troop stay close and work together.
