It was designed to be a modern machine for ground warfare. The tank was named after General Creighton Abrams.

This tank has many special parts to keep the crew safe. It uses Chobham armor, which is a strong composite armor. This armor is about two feet thick.

The tank also has a blowout compartment. This is a place to store ammunition safely. If the ammo is hit, the blast goes out of the compartment.

The Abrams uses a gas turbine engine. This engine provides a lot of power to move the heavy tank.

Early models used a 105 mm gun. Later models use a larger 120 mm gun. There are three main versions: the M1, M1A1, and M1A2. Each new version adds better electronics and protection. Many other countries also use the Abrams.
