However, the project faced many cultural differences and design disagreements. The costs also grew significantly, reaching nearly $1 million per unit by 1969. Because of these delays and high costs, the partnership ended in 1970. The U.S. Army then began the XM815 project in 1972 to start fresh.

Developing the tank involved intense competition between companies. In 1976, prototypes from Chrysler and General Motors were tested at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

General Motors initially had a superior design regarding armor and fire control. However, a political decision changed the requirements for the project. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld required the tank to use a turbine engine. Since Chrysler was the only contractor with a gas turbine, they were awarded the $4.9 billion contract on November 12, 1976.

Chrysler eventually lowered its bid to $196 million to win the project.

Early production models faced several technical challenges during testing. When the first preproduction units arrived in March 1978, they had serious issues. Mud and dirt would build up under the hull, which caused the tracks to be thrown.

Engineers also found that poorly fitting air filters allowed debris to enter the engine. Furthermore, some tankers discovered they could shift the transmission directly from acceleration to reverse. This maneuver was known as the "bow tie." Chrysler eventually resolved these issues by installing scrapers, better filters, and transmission limiters.

The M1 Abrams has a long history of deployment in various global conflicts. It first saw combat during the Gulf War.

It was also deployed during the Iraq War and the War in Afghanistan. Other nations have used the tank in different conflicts as well. For example, Iraq used it against the Islamic State, and Ukraine has used it during the Russo-Ukrainian War. The tank is not only used by the U.S. Army but also by several export nations. These include Egypt, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Poland, and Iraq.
