Luohe is a prefecture-level city located in central Henan province, China. It serves as an important urban and economic hub within the region. The city sits near the Funiu Mountains and the Huaibei Plains. Geographically, it spans from 113°27′E to 114°16′E in longitude. It also reaches from 33°24′N to 33°59′N in latitude. This location places it in both central and southern parts of the province.

The city is surrounded by several other major urban areas. Xuchang lies to the north of Luohe. To the east, you will find the city of Zhoukou. Zhumadian is located to the south of the city. Pingdingshan sits to the west. This positioning makes Luohe part of a busy network of cities. The city is divided into several administrative parts. It directly administers three districts and two counties. These divisions include Yancheng, Shaoling, and Yuanhui districts. It also includes Wuyang and Linying counties.

Water is a defining feature of the local geography. Luohe contains 81 different rivers. Every one of these rivers is part of the larger Huai River system. These waterways provide essential natural resources for the people. The rivers contain high-grade rock salt. This salt is pure enough to be used in food preparation. The rivers also provide a specific type of sand. This sand is highly suitable for use in building materials.

The history of Luohe shows it has been a commercial center since ancient times. One notable person from its past was a scholar named Xu Shen. He lived during the Han dynasty. Xu Shen is famous for compiling the Shuowen Jiezi. This was the very first dictionary for Chinese characters. This historical legacy connects the modern city to ancient Chinese learning.

Luohe has a very strong economy driven by many different industries. The city has seen consistent Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth throughout the 2010s. In 2010, the GDP was 68.049 billion Yuan. By 2018, it had grown to 123.666 billion Yuan. This growth includes a strong tertiary industry, which refers to the service sector. In 2018, this sector produced 38.44 billion Yuan. This accounted for 31.1% of the city's total economic output.

Agriculture and manufacturing are also vital to the city. Luohe produces wheat, corn, cotton, and various vegetables. It is also known for mushrooms, melons, and fruit. The city is particularly famous for its ham production industry. The WH Group is headquartered here. This company is the largest pork producer in the world. It also owns Smithfield Foods. Besides food, the city has light industries like textiles, plastics, and shoes. It also has heavy industries, such as cement production.

Many people live and study within the city's limits. The 2020 Chinese census recorded a population of 2,367,490 inhabitants. A large portion of these people live in the built-up metro area. This area consists of the Yancheng, Shaoling, and Yuanhui districts. The metro area has 1,326,687 residents. The city also supports a large student population. In 2018, there were 98,100 children enrolled in kindergartens. There are also many students in primary, junior high, and high schools.
