A lumbar puncture is a medical test. Some people call it a spinal tap.

Doctors use a thin needle to reach a special fluid. This fluid is called cerebrospinal fluid, or CSF. The CSF surrounds your brain and spine. It works like a cushion to protect them. It also helps move nutrients and waste.

Doctors use this test to find out why a person is sick. They can check the fluid for germs. This helps them find meningitis. Meningitis is a serious illness. They can also look for signs of bleeding or other diseases. Sometimes, doctors use the needle to give medicine. This is called intrathecal use.

The procedure is usually safe. Doctors use local anesthesia to numb the skin. The person might lie on their side. They often curl up like a baby. This helps the doctor reach the right spot. A common side effect is a headache. This happens if the needle is not a special type. Most headaches go away with rest or medicine.
